Wig Dictionary: Essential Terms for Your Wig Journey

  1. Newbie – Someone new to wearing wigs and just starting their journey.

  2. Wig – A general term for a hairpiece or unit used to replace or enhance natural hair.

  3. Weft – A curtain of hair sewn together to create tracks used in wigs and extensions.

  4. Fringe – Another term for bangs, referring to hair styled to fall over the forehead.

  5. Baby Hairs – Small strands of hair at the hairline of a wig, often styled to create a natural look or camouflage the wig’s edge.

  6. Density – The thickness or fullness of a wig. Standard densities range from 120-140% (natural) to 150-200% (full volume).

  7. Ear Tabs – Sections of the wig that rest near the temples and help secure the fit.

  8. Hand-Tied – A technique where individual hair fibers are tied by hand into the wig cap for a natural appearance.

  9. Standard Wig Cap – The most common and budget-friendly wig cap design, made with layered wefts for lightweight comfort and ventilation.

  10. Custom Wig – A wig made to your exact specifications, including hair texture, cap size, style, and color, for a personalized fit and look.

  11. Knots – The small dark dots where hair strands are tied onto lace in lace-front and full-lace wigs.
